The Boss MZ‑2 Digital Metalizer (Blue label, Made in Japan) is a sought-after vintage distortion pedal produced between late 1987 and around 1991. It delivers a powerful analog-driven distortion paired with selectable digital doubling or chorus/delay modes, creating a distinctive late‑’80s heavy metal sound. The pedal features stereo outputs and six modes: standard distortion, three distortion + delay settings, and two distortion + chorus options.

The control layout is straightforward yet flexible: Drive governs distortion intensity, Tone shapes brightness and character, Level controls overall output volume, and the 6‑way Mode switch selects among the six effect configurations. Internally, the analog distortion circuit is separate from the digital processor used for chorus and delay layering.

Among artists, the MZ‑2 has been spotted with British guitarist Tim Bricheno and occasionally appears in documentary footage featuring Jeff Buckley—both demonstrating its studio and performance appeal.
