The Electro-Harmonix EH4800 Small Stone Phase Shifter is a vintage, four-stage analog phaser revered for its lush, warm sweeps and robust USA-built chassis. Featuring the iconic COLOR switch and a dedicated RATE knob, this classic pedal delivers a spectrum of phase effects—from subtle modulation to dramatic “jet plane” swooshes. Handmade in the USA circa 1980, the EH4800 is built tough and prized by tone aficionados for its fluid, musical character.
Controls: RATE adjusts the sweep speed (turn clockwise for faster phasing), the COLOR switch toggles between a full, smooth phase (switch down) and a pronounced, hollowed-out effect with stronger feedback (switch up), and the footswitch engages the effect in true bypass mode.
Notable history: One of the early compact pedal phasers, its circuit was designed by David Cockerell—Electro-Harmonix’s chief design engineer—who later contributed to iconic effects like the Electric Mistress and various digital delays.
Vintage appeal & tonal character: The EH4800 offers thick, fluid sweeps with liquid transparency, and the COLOR switch adds a tingling swirl, making it a go-to for styles ranging from blues to stoner rock. Many prefer the original EH4800 over later nano versions, noting its usable rate across the knob's rotation and consistently lush sound.
