The Jen Cry Baby Super is a sought-after vintage wah pedal from the 1970s, hand-built in Pescara, Italy. This version features a rare dual inductor—original Jen units sometimes included green or white Fasel inductors, prized for their smooth, vocal tonal sweep. In mid‑1970s models produced before about 1975, red or white Fasel inductors were standard; later units switched to Japanese TDK types, which yield a noticeably different character. The “Super” model distinguishes itself from the standard Cry Baby by including an external DC power jack while retaining battery operation.
Controls are minimal: a foot‑activated pedal sweep and a volume level internally. The pedal operates with an uncomplicated single‑pot wah circuit (identical in basic layout to early Cry Baby units), coupled with the double inductor offering richer resonance and smoother transition from toe‑down lows to heel‑down highs. True bypass wiring is typical, with few internal modifications aside from routine capacitor or switch servicing.
Road‑worthy yet lightweight thanks to its aluminium chassis, the Jen Cry Baby Super delivers a warm, rich wah tone that many users describe as more organic and alive than modern Cry Baby variants. Jen Elettronica crafted wahs for European brands including Vox and Thomas Organ beginning in 1968; their Cry Baby line emerged from that period and continued through the 1970s until Dunlop’s acquisition.
