The Ibanez ST9 Super Tube Screamer Overdrive is a sought-after vintage overdrive pedal from the original 1980s Tube Screamer family. Produced in Japan and introduced as part of the Power Series, the ST9 expanded on the classic Tube Screamer formula with increased gain and a slightly broader tonal range while retaining the smooth, mid-focused character that made the series famous.
This 1984 example, serial number 460211, features the desirable TA75558P operational amplifier chip, a component often associated with early Japanese Tube Screamer models. The pedal delivers warm, responsive overdrive with excellent touch sensitivity, making it equally suitable for pushing a tube amplifier into natural breakup or adding sustain and harmonic richness to clean and edge-of-breakup tones.
Controls for Drive, Tone, and Level allow precise shaping of the sound, from subtle boost and bluesy crunch to more saturated lead tones. Compared to the TS9, the ST9 offers additional gain on tap while maintaining the focused midrange response that helps guitars cut through a mix.
As an original Made in Japan vintage pedal from 1984, the ST9 remains a highly regarded choice among collectors and players seeking authentic classic Ibanez overdrive tones.
